One thing is for sure, the laser can't read your backups. So first thing is to clean the lens with a cleaning disk. Works 50% of the time. Then read my earlier post "CD-R Burning Speed". The object here is to burn as near perfectly so that your laser behaves like on a pressed CD. When you've got these conditions right and it still happens, then you should have someone re-calibrate your laser to read CD-Rs. If that doesn't work, the laser is shot and needs replacing.
