Well, it does matter, at least a little bit
 You can still fix the protection error by contacting either Ubisoft support or the StarForce support, someone there will give you (after checking some other solutions) a 'No-DVD' which works with your DVD only but it doesn't check for it. It will most likely still be protected by SF tho... Hardware problems aren't as easily fixed, you'll have to buy new one etc.
