I have seen 3 versions of the patch.
Nr. 1: DVD-Starforce, usual DVD-Version in EU Nr. 2: DVD-Tages, DVD-Version in Spain Nr. 3: Starforce-Active-Pro, Internetsites like gamesload use it. No sure about the US-Version, but I thought it's Tages. I think it was clear, that a patch will make problems with mini images/cracks. Rember SpellForce 1... There were many patches. And the most patches did also update the copy protection. Sure there are also other games, but SpellForce was hard  P.S. Have you tried a 1:1 image? It didn't work with version 1.0, but a mini image did work... Greets
