SniperElite: No-CD doesn'twork :-(

I launch the program, and it just crashes without ever reaching the title screen. The game runs fine with the DVD in the drive. I am running Windows XP with SP2. I tried the original one, and then just for kicks, I tried the one that is supposedly runs on Windows 2K/Me, and it crashes too. What am I doing wrong? Can anyone else getthis game to run with the no-DVD exe?
