Newb question

I followed the instructions on how to make a backup following the instructions and the game worked fine until I tried to update it to get online. The update downloaded and installed, but when I tried to restart the game, a "wrong cd" error came up. I guess I need the latest version crack to get online, but I can't find it. The game is the original Rise Of Nations.

P.S: On megagames.com there are game fixs with a "no-cd" label and some with a "backup" label, which one should I get?
