Broken PS2

I have a PS2 that's been sitting in a cupboard for months, that has a rather major problem ...

I attempted to install a PS2 Network Adaptor when they were first released, the PS2 "froze up" on the software install & I had to restart it.
Since then the things never worked, It powers up O.K, but when you press the eject button the disc tray flies out at warp speed & sounds like it still wants to open further & the tray won't close until you power off.

I have googled until I can google no more & can't seem to find anything like it ... Any ideas are appreciated ... If not, it's going on ebay!

I should also mention that it's NEVER been modded or pulled apart at all.
