This method does not work, as the GCN can't read +/-R(W) disks yet (no modchip) I have heard that you can use a program (can't talk about it on this forum) and it makes it so the gamecube can read the burnt dvds but, this program can only be used by Authorized Nintendo personel, and so, no, you can't use 8cm blank dvds in a GCN.

Also, people might say "My m8 used FreeLoader and it made it so the burned dvds worked" this is NOT true, it was tried as soon as people could get a hold of FreeLoader and blank 8cm media.
