The LA chip is rated (if it is like the BA chip on earlier models) to dissipate 2.2W at 25°C. Everyone knows that in the parts of the PS2 that the fan doesn't reach, the temperature will rise - probably to about 60°C. In that case the power dissipation threshold is much lower and certainly exceeded if the laser has to deal with poor quality DVD-R media. Unless a heatsink is fitted like it used to be on the v7s and earlier. So that's my advice if you want to avoid potential problems downstream.
