DVDr backups whats wrong?

Hi all,

Have Action Replay 2.2
No Solder modchip for v.4 PS2

Tried backups on Verbatims - burned with Primo DVD (and tried Nero), tried every boot method under the sun (?) using MGS2 as original (also Airblade), when tray closes and press X (tried R1 + O also), Ps2 just freezes!!!??

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong, everything seems to be right, does the laser need calibrating? (Note -I have been playing CDr backups for ages using the knife trick, works fine)
