If you take it apart you will void your warranty and no repair will be done from microsoft.
About the dashboard error, I have heard of some people getting dashboard error not because of HW failure but due to some clock setting file being corrupt. If you open up the xbox all warranties will be lost. But seriously, wouldn't this be the perfect time to chip the xbox, install a 200gb HDD and have some fun? :P
