FRAGGING (Non Modded xbox)

Hey all,

The xbox me and my brother share has just started fragging. We were playing sniper elite when it froze.

We turned it off, and my brother was going to a relatives so he took it with him. He set it up once he got their and he has described whats happening to me and it sounds like its fragging. (everythings plugged in to).

The xbox has not been opened nor modded.

The xbox is displaying a message saying contact microsoft support or something similar.

Any help would be nice... Oh if it is a fault, will they repair it for free, or charge.

Thanks

if u didnt open it
warranty is still there (or if u have somethin liek a best buy service plan)
u should be able to return it
how long ago did u get it?

Right...

I've plugged it in and turned it on.. its flashing dark red and green... it says "your xbox needs a service"

in lots of different languages, and in the top left corner it has number 21.

This any help?

(I bought the xbox 2nd hand)

Did the xbox X logo appear after the error, or does that flubber animation not even appear? That error is usually a launch failure error. The xbox made it to the xbe (dash or game), but something couldn't be done so it fragged. Unfortunately, it is a very general error and hard to pinpoint.

It probably isn't a dashboard read error because games don't even launch. The HDD could be bad, but it would usuallly give a different error for that. Can you hear the HDD or the DVD drive spinning?

Update...

The flubber animation appears, the xbox logo appears, then straight to the your xbox needs a service bit.

Thanks :)

hmm... Well, you know the eeprom is fine. It gives error 21, so the HDD and dvd drive is probably ok. It doesn't launch a game?

Mmm, your ram could have gone bad, like once it fills a block everything corrupts. I don't think that is the problem though.

It is probably your mobo fried somewhere by over heating or poor air circulation. If your HDD is in fact spinning, then you will probably need to replace your mobo (and hdd since yours is locked to your dead one).

You are probably better off buying a used xbox.

H|LLJD00 21-10-2005 09:28

crap! Lol

well the errors now changed to 16, haha :S

Quall999 21-10-2005 16:49

error 16 is a dashboard error. If you were getting error 21, and now just got error 16, then your IDE cables are bad, or your HDD is o the brink of death. My guess is that the HDD is corrupt. Since you get error 16, do games load now?

H|LLJD00 22-10-2005 07:48

Nope not loading games (just checked again) still says 16.

Should I take it apart and have a look see?

kosmiq 22-10-2005 10:54

If you take it apart you will void your warranty and no repair will be done from microsoft.

About the dashboard error, I have heard of some people getting dashboard error not because of HW failure but due to some clock setting file being corrupt.

If you open up the xbox all warranties will be lost.

But seriously, wouldn't this be the perfect time to chip the xbox, install a 200gb HDD and have some fun? :P

Quall999 22-10-2005 19:02

I think the xbox would have probably gone into the dreaded clock loop if that were the case. The fact that he was getting error 21 before and just changed to 16 is odd though.

You said you bought it second hand, did you mean used from a gamestore or from a non-retailer? If the warrenty is there then yah, go with that.

If you get a chip, just remember that you cannot switch HDD's unless you first unlock the current one, otherwise the mobo will reject the hookup.

H|LLJD00 23-10-2005 06:48

I phoned M$ and they want £79.99 to fix it, lol not a chance...

So what do you advise I do then?

kosmiq 23-10-2005 08:27

Chip away.... :D

Atleast that is what I would do, cheaper than MS repair and gives a lot more fun with the xbox...

Do some reading and if you got the skills to do it yourself do that, otherwise find someone that can. Go for DuoX2 or something like that, cheap and reliable.

Quall999 23-10-2005 13:50

I second that. Get a cheap chip and if it fails to work, then it is not much money wasted. If you choose to re-purchase, then the chip can be salvaged :)

I did suggested DuoX2... :P
It is very cheap and very good. Even the clones are good to be honest.
