Editing .msi Files

Hi ppl,
if you ever need to edit an .msi file the best program ive found for this is a prog that is installed along with the intelsdk its called ORCA ive upped it to a site for download along with a pic of what to look for in order to edit a volume label on a cd usualy used to convert multiple cds to a dvd or single cd.

im using Rome Total War as an example there are 3 cds to this game and to put them onto a single dvd you will need to change the volume label

Rome_TW_CD1, Rome_TW_CD2, Rome_TW_CD3 these are the volume labels for the 3 cdr's open orca and open the .msi file from cd1, look for the media folder on the left plane and select it you'll notice the volume labels once you click the media folder on this .msi file there are 2 colums of 26 DiskPromt & Volume Label meaning you will need to change 56 labels to your new label say RTW DVD double clicking on each one will allow you to copy and paste the new ones in once all 56 are changed to RTW DVD you can click save then use that instead of the origional from cd1 this will complete the change from 3cdr's to 1dvd i hope this helps someone whos not to sure..

there are some instances were this will not be enough be warned

i will edit this if i find any mistakes in it lol.....

Now download and install ‘Orca’. Once Orca is installed go to the Temp folder and right click the file ‘Rome_Total War (TM).msi’ and from near the top of the menu choose ‘Edit with Orca’. (You may have to edit the properties of this file to make it read only, but as it is copied to the harddrive it is probably already edited automatically)
When opened you will see 2 window panes, go to the ‘Tables’ one on the left and scroll down to ‘Media’
Click on ‘Media’ this will show you the entries in the Right pane. There will be 6 columns.
Change all the entries in the ‘VolumeLabel’ column to Rome_TW_CD1 (See included Pics Below)
Then ‘Save’ it. (You can also use a program called ‘Masai Editor’ instead of ‘Orca’)
The above quote was copied from the Rome-Total War CD2DVD conversion!! I think thats enough said!

One important point people seem to fail to say, ORCA is Win XP only according to microcrap.

ORCA works in every OS, from 98 to XP (and, of course, Me and 2k)

@Sidney
You know where you went wrong dont you? You made the mistake of believing what 'Microcrap' said!
I read your post earlier but couldnt really comment on it as I run XP myself so therefore I hadnt tested your theory on the other OS, but did find it hard to believe as no-one else had commented on it ealier!

@ Freeman100
Errr I think you have misunderstood what I meant by copied from.........
The quote I gave you was what I had copied from my own post!! I was merely trying to let you know that it had already been written! I wasnt knocking your work at all!! Just tryin to let you know I did include how to use Orca! I wasnt implying you had copied anything! Obviously there was an inoccent misunderstanding there!!

Your Orca zip archive is corrupted. I can't open it with WinZP nor WinRAR.
