I was thinking about buying a Magic 2 chip and was wondering how long before a chip in general becomes obsolete?

A no swap chip that has no macrovision defeat or DVD region free becomes obsolete when one that has these functions appears.
If these don't matter, then a no swap chip doesn't become obsolete. That said, Messiah has been sidelined by Magic 2's greater PS2 coverage.
