Stupid question?

Pretty new to this so please bare with me.

When I download some cracks they download as .rar docs. These never seem to work. what is a .rar doc? They say replace the standard exe, but if you replace the exe with the .rar the crack never works. Some cracks downlaod as exe format and they work fine. What am I doing wrong??
