- Practice on some scrap boards with soldering to the sides of micro capacitors. See how easy they come off if you use too much solder or hold the iron too long.

- Use wire wrap ( laminated wire ) Easier to work with. Get a bit of solder on your tip, touch it to the end of the laminated wire for a second, it should bond and melt the coating off the end. Wire is ready.

- You can prime the spot on the board with a tiny bit of flux, I don’t bother. I just get a fresh bead of rosin core solder on my tip, knock the excess off and touch the spot for a split second.

- Knock any excess solder off your iron tip and touch the tip of wire you prepared to the spot on the board you prepared, then touch the iron over the wire for a split second and connection should be bonded. I give a tiny tug on the wire to make sure.

When I briefly looked into soldering myself, dust2dust game me a good bit of advice. Get hold of an old PC modem or something similar. Start off soldering to the larger points, then work you way onto the smaller points. Practice, practice, then practice some more. When you have finished, practice again.
