I've noticed that some of my backups behave slightly different to my originals. for instance, Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons Of Liberty, I dumped an ISO image with DVD Decrypter, then burned it with DVD Decrypter at 1x speed. but in the codec, the words take longer to load up, and pretty much everything takes longer to load, not that much though. did i rip the image too fast, or is this a universal trait of backups?
my backup of MGS3 snake eater seems flawless, everything loads up fast, just as fast as the original. and then on the other side of the coin, my backup of Second Sight, has load times that you could die of old age through. I do realise that if i loaded them onto a HDD, i probably wouldnt have any of these problems. my trouble with that is, i have alot of stuff on my HDD, and i need somewhere to store it temporarily, because the PS2 has to reformat the drive, or so I'm told. I know it could be my media, but I'm using Ridata DVD-R's with Ritek G05 dye. oh, 1 more question. if i dump an image from a backup that has slightly slow loading ties, but still works, if i burn that onto better media or put it on the HDD, will it behave like the original, or will it be slightly changed? i would have thought its all the same data, so no, but I can't be sure.

Nothing is better than an original disc - but using a really good quality DVD-R is the key to making about as close to a perfect backup as you can get.
Good DVD-R include the following: Ritek G04 (G05 tend to be a bit crappy) Taiyo Yuden Verbatim DataLife PLUS (standard DataLife suck ass! )Also, today's modern disc dyes are made to perform better and be much more reliable when burned at their maximum write speed, and therefore slower burns on newer high speed media can cause problems. Burning slower is a bit of a mis-conception which is still with us from when recordable DVD media was in its infancy. Back then, it was true to burn slower, but nowadays it causes more problems by doing this.

no - if you put the slow discs onto the HDD, they'd play as an original had been loaded onto the HDD. Basically, you have the same data on both the copy and the original, but as the dye isn't as reflective as on the original, it is slower to come off the disc as the laser has to work harder to retrieve the data. So, you won't notice any difference between putting the original or the copy on the HDD.
Basically, in short, loading your slow backup onto the HDD will cure the problems with it being slower.

someone explained it to me liek this: ^ = data _ = space on dye fast burn: __^^__^^__^^__ slow burn: _^_^_^_^_^_^_ if you can make any sence of that, i think thats right. ok, so i need to get my games on a HDD asap! I'll have to lend a drive off a friend temporarily. or i could buy one, use it temporarily, then take it back afterwards. hmm, I'll think of something. do you know of any list of games that need HDD patches? I know that GT4 needs one. any list of known game errors or something would be cool. i dunno, just wondering i am

another little question:
dvd decrypter makes an ISO and an MDS. i dont really need the MDS, as theyre usually for MDF's. will it be any better if i use the MDS ? i think it gives you that option for "Play Station 2" at the bottom if you use a MDS. I'm just wondering, why would you need a MDS for an ISO in the first place? isnt DVD Decrypter being a bit pointless for even bothering to make it?

But when I did the same burn on a G04 disc, I had no problems whatsoever. Sure it took slightly longer to read the disc but i didnt have anymore audio/game action sync problems afterward. Its obvious that my PS2's didnt like the G05's at all. So I stuck with the G04's for my game backups, but I still use the G05's for my DVD movie backups, which works fine in my standalone players. |
