psx backup with patch

hi ive just got a few things i need to clear up with psx things so here i go

1 when i back up a game and play it on my modded psx some times the games wont work but some times they do but only get so far into the game before it slows down drasticly and eventually freezes what causes this and what does a patch do does it fix this or does it convert pal to ntsc or vice versa im not real good at these things so if some one could help out that would be most appreciated oh btw do they all need patches does it help to have them on every backup i have thanks

It could be because you are using inferior media to burn on.
Some PSX games have protection, most have had patches released to overcome that protection.
For a list of games, with or without protection check here - http://www.geocities.com/psxcplist/
To obtain patches go to megagames.com
Some patches are to change region of game to/from NTSC/PAL

I only use Verbatim for PSX games, you need the dark blue dye cds (or as dark as you can get).
Better to start afresh.
