I have a problem installing Maxpayne2. Halfway through the installation of the 1stcd(2cd game) I get the message 'data error(cyclic redundancy error)'.Now just to be sure I tried installing the game on my friend's system and the installation went along just fine. The only difference between our computers is the OS(I use xp and he win98).On the help file of the cd I was advised to click off the DMAoption the cdrom properties in the device manager. But there is no such option as far as I can see.The only option to click off is digital cd playback and I tried that but it got me nowhere either. Is there anything I can do to get this game installed?
I'm not super into computers so please explain any tech instructions(if necessary) in simple terms.

Is this an original or burned copy?

Clean your CD/DVD and/or your CD/DVD-ROM drive. Also, if this is an original, contact the publisher for a replacement; if this is a backup copy, create another one. (Except for the cleaning recommendation, this is all covered by the FAQ, you should read it!)

You got it,it is a burned copy. One that doesn't seem to work only on my sys. A couple of hours back I tried installing on my neighbour's(and it is a much lower end sys than mine) and yet it worked just fine. Coincidentally my neighbour also uses win98 for an OS.
And Luciel firmware flash....care to elaborate on what it means where I can get one(freeware if any cuz I can't afford one right now)? But guys isn't there anything I can enable or disable in ctrl panel or elsewhere that would give me some chance of getting the install done? Please forgive me if Im being too naive. |

If it installs fine on another pc then the problem is not with the cd itself but your pc.
It could be a ram error or even a faulty cdrom drive. I have had similar errors on different pc's before. Suggest you first find some ram diagnostics and run some tests on your pc. |

Firmware is the internal software of the CD/DVD-ROM drive. (If you had an intelligent Commodore drive, with its own CPU and operating system, you know what I'm talking about.) Go to the manufacturer's webpage (e.g. Plextor), find the latest firmware for your drive (e.g. PX-720A), download it and read the intstructions on how to do the update.
(Gotta add this to the FAQ, I guess...)

Thanks for yr responses.
My sys is assembled and I have to get to the assembler/dealer first but will contact the manufacturer soon for the firmware thing.Incidentally I installed nfs underground after that(just to check) and it went flawlessly. So there can't be a prob with the ram or the cd drive....right? And cd isn't scratched. And how do I alter the read speed of the cd drive?Maybe decreasing the read speed might help with the install(after reading similar threads with crc issues). |

For controlling the CD/DVD speed, see Ahead's CDSpeed.

Thanks guys for all ya help esp Joe forster, I downloaded nero cd speed and scandisced the cd you know what at the exact spot where I got stuck with the installation I have a bad sector. I guess I will have to reburn the cd. But I wonder how the install worked in my friend's sys.But then again I didn't actually play the game. When I got past the point where I got stuck installing the cd(in my friend's sys) I stopped assuming there is something wrong with my sys.
Really guys THANKS again solving my problem.I'm grateful.

Ok for future issues, I will submise this is a copy of YOUR original.
Read the bad disk with isobuster (latest free build does) it will run outside the fragile windows file system and most time it will recover the date from media, I would then burn a backup copy and bin the fooked one, you can slow down the reading of the drive by nero cd/dvd speed or such and swap between 2 different rom drives during its attemp to read media, ive did this many times and the hardest one ever was my Madona album from 1987, lucky i saved it and burned to a cdr but i did have to use addition of cd/dvd polish to get it to read. |

A given CD/DVD (original or burnt) may work in a higher-quality (better brand, higher priced) drive but not in a lower-quality one. Good brands are: Plextor (have always been the best, but very expensive!), Pioneer (became the best very recently), LG (was the best in the relatively recent past but not anymore) and Sony (was the best in the farther past, until a few years ago). I wouldn't recommend other brands...
