Creating backups of GDroms

I know this is a subject that must have been covered many times, but i've just gotten hold of a DC and can't find a good guide to making a backup of a game (the game i got with the DC was Sonic Adventure, and it's pretty scratched)

The one tutorial i read said something about a serial cable for backups? is this right and is there anywhere online to buy one?
