there is no advantage or something.
if you configure both drives as 'cable select' then master/slave will be controlled by the connection of the drives with the ide cable.
the drive connected at the end of the cable will be master and the drive connected to the middle will be slave.
if for some reason you want the drive connected to the end of the ide cable to be slave then you have to configure it by using the jumpers.

Using the Cable Select method, you jumper both drives to "Cable Select". In the Cable Select method the devices are heirarchically identified electrically to the IDE controller by their relative position on the cable; the "first", or primary (HDD-0), device is the device connected at the opposite end of the cable from the motherboard, the "second", secondary (HDD-1), device is the device connected to the middle connector on the cable.
