Don't claim to be an expert, but I do have some experience with this due to owning like 4 PS2's. For an NTSC U/C the following appears to apply, with regard to DVD-Rs:

Origa: V1-4 (best all-around chip)
Neo4: V4 only (and it appears that select datecodes only work)
Neo4.1: V3-4 (may work with V2, but nobody's tested yet)
Messiah: V4 only (no swap all the way. The best)
R-Mod: V5 and now V6 only (solderless)

I know it's a pain, but there it is.

take your v1 to second hand shop they give (mine does £110 if boxed as new (they sell £150)
by now laser v1 is no good im 90% sure it wont read dvdr as its worn badly new laser cost £49 +fitting
£110+49 +fitting
u might as well buy nice new v5 with new laser(if u r pal if ntsc u need v4 )
then u can fit the great messiah
if u want messiah or whole package new v5 fitted send me email for info
