Sega coming back in the console business? or not?
>> From gamespot's Rumor Control:
Quote:
RUMOR: At E3, Sega will announce it is getting back into the console business.

Source: An e-mail blast inviting press to Sega's "mystery event" at E3.

The official story: "SEGA cannot comment on rumors relating to its exclusive press event on day one of E3. SEGA remains excited about its powerful lineup of yet-to-be announced titles."--Sega spokesman.

What we heard: Ever since Dreamcast production ceased in 2001, the console's diehard fans have held out hope that it would rise from the ashes. This week, hope came in the form of a one-paragraph press invitation to Sega's E3 presentation. "Learn about SEGA's 2004 line-up and hear BIG news you'd NEVER guess," read the invite, which promised "explosive news--something even YOU won't be able to guess!" (Emphasis in the original). Within minutes, Sega loyalists were churning out messianic predictions of a new and improved Dreamcast. "Financially revitalized, finally debt-free, Sega now firmly believes it has what it takes to rule the roost," read one. But before you break out the straightjackets, consider this: Amusement-machine giant Sammy is Sega's majority stockholder, and its president Hajime Satomi is Sega's chairman. This year, Sammy's new Atomiswave arcade platform will replace the veteran NeoGeo format. The NeoGeo also came in a home console version which had a customer base fanatical enough to shell out hundreds of dollars per game--in other words, a proven (if small) market. The Atomiswave's hardware is even more compact than the NeoGeo's. Sammy has announced Sega will focus on developing games for the Atomiswave. Could Sega's big announcement be a new, Sega-branded home console based on the Atomiswave? Or is all this much ado about nothing?

Bogus or not bogus?: Although it's an intriguing theory, it's probably bogus. Note to Sega: kudos for making one publicity e-mail go a long way.

Personally I would have thrown this thread in the DC Forum, but then not many people would have seen it

Anyways, being the SEGA mark that I am, and before I start shouting Viva La SEGA, I dont think this Announcement has anything to do with SEGA entering the hardware market again. The only reason their debts have now been cleared is because of the huge investment those Sammy people made. Without it, SEGA would still be operating at a loss at the moment. As much as it hurts me to say this, its software hasnt exactly set the Charts alight either (besides Sonic Hero's, which sold tons worldwide). I believe the announcement will probably be something along the lines of a next gen update for, say, Streets of Rage or some other long dormant franchise (of which, SEGA has loads). Perhaps, they will be working together with Shiggy Miyamoto again on a new franchise? or even that Hideo Kojima (MGS), or how about that British 'Celebrity', Peter Moleneux (yeah, I probably spelt his name wrong) Who Knows. But I doubt it has ANYTHING to do with Hardware, SEGA cant afford to go toe to toe with Sony and Microsoft (Nintendo is basically living off the cashcows called Game Boy and Pokemon at the moment, I can see the day they go the way of SEGA too). Sammy will never let them do it.

oh i LOVE sega!! when i was a child i played with the gamegear and the saturn. i never understood why all of my friends disliked sega....hm because it wasn't so popular i think less advertising in europe. dreamcast was the last hardware from sega?? i think sega stood for good quality(seems that only japanese realized it!!) and now sega is still developing software...best wishes SEGA *snif*

Sega to pitch sports-heavy lineup at E3

A full court of new ESPN titles will join Amazing Island, Blood Will Tell, Virtua Quest, Otogi 2, and others in Los Angeles.

Sega joined the massing pack of publishers announcing their E3 lineups. Though most of the games on its list were well known, the publisher did announce several new titles, including the newest installments in several ESPN franchises.

Sega confirmed ESPN NHL 2005, ESPN NBA 2005, and ESPN College Hoops 2005 will join the previously announced ESPN NHL 2005 on its Visual Concepts-developed sports roster. Two new nonsports titles were also unveiled, including the brawler Spikeout Battle Street and Amazing Island, which was previously released in Japan.

Another Japanese favorite, Otogi 2, is now definitely coming to America, and it appears Puyo Pop Fever will now be GameCube-exclusive in the US, despite being released for the Xbox and PlayStation 2 across the Pacific. Three of the games on Sega's list--Headhunter: Redemption, Blood Will Tell (then called Dororo), and Altered Beast--were also on display at last year's E3.

The complete list is as follows:

Altered Beast (PlayStation 2)
Amazing Island (GameCube)
Astro Boy (PlayStation 2)
Astro Boy: Omega Factor (Game Boy Advance)
Blood Will Tell (PlayStation 2)
ESPN NBA 2005 (Xbox, PlayStation 2)
ESPN College Hoops 2005 (Xbox, PlayStation 2)
ESPN NFL 2005 (Xbox, PlayStation 2)
ESPN NHL 2005 (Xbox, PlayStation 2)
Headhunter: Redemption (PlayStation 2, Xbox)
Otogi 2 (Xbox)
Puyo Pop Fever (GameCube)
Sega SuperStars (PlayStation 2 with EyeToy)
Spikeout Battle Street (Xbox)
Virtua Quest (GameCube, PlayStation 2)

EXCLUSIVE: SEGA "BOMBSHELL" TAKES SHAPE

Chatter in and around E3 2004 suggests PC owners may wish to keep an eye on the Japanese company's forthcoming "mystery" announcement...

23:21 Speculation continues apace as to the nature of Sega's allegedly "explosive" (company's own description) announcement, due on Wednesday morning at its booth at E3 2004 in Los Angeles (see here for further details).
The Announcement Formerly Known as "Bombshell", which we (un)helpfully rebranded "Segaton" in honour of the now legendary Nintendo Megaton has whipped up the gaming community into a froth of conjecture, ranging from new Sega hardware, to Sega developing exclusively for a single platform. Like, duh.

Conspiracy theories aside, the first apparent concrete information has been brought to our attention by sources operating close to the ground in LA this week. According to our ever watchful spies, Sega has secretly courted journalists from PC publications in the US, suggesting it would be prudent to attend the briefing as it is directly relevant to their interests, without actually going into specifics. Further whispers also point to the announcement being of an online nature in particular.

Alas, whilst offering fresh insight into Sega's self-styled 'Mystery Briefing', it throws up far more questions than answers. Does the PC element mean Sega is to announce a new wave of games specifically for the PC platform?; perhaps simultaneous release of titles on PC and consoles, featuring an online component?; perhaps something to do with Sega's deal with Sports Interactive highlighting a bold new online initiative?; or, equally, none of the above whatsoever. Heigh-ho.

Frankly, we just don't know; but we do know that, if you're a PC gamer, you might want to check back on Wednesday, when we'll bring you what Sega claims is: "explosive news - something even you won't be able to guess!"

This had better be good...
