Call Of Duty 2 Problems

Hi,
I’ve got a couple of problems and I hope someone out there can help. The first problem is related to artifacts. I played through the Russian campaign without any problems but when I started the British campaign, artifacts started showing too. They look like big white shiney walls and they're all around which makes playing the game impossible. I tried posting some screenshots of them but for some reason I'm not allowed. I have the latest drivers for my ATI 9800Pro, I’ve tried different settings in the graphics options and nothing changes. I just finished playing through F.E.A.R. and Quake 4 without any trouble so I’m guessing the graphics card is fine. This brings me to the other problem. In the graphics option of CoD2, the renderer is set to DirectX 7 and I can’t change it to DirectX 9 because the game crashes to desktop. The same thing was with the demo of the game. ATI 9800Pro is a DirectX 9 compatible card, so what the hell?! Could this be a problem with the drivers or something else? I know I don’t have a state of the art machine, but it should be good enough to play the game without any serious issues.
Tnx

My specs are:
AMD Barton 2600+
Abit NF7-S
1GB Kingston DDR 333
ATI Radeon 9800Pro
