I have just got a mod-chip installed on my ps2 10000 JAP NTSC machine. The person who installed it for me would not tell me the chips name but it looks like an jap origa chip. It has more than 14+ installed and is really complex. In order to play backup games an GS or AR is still required. DVDR backups don't require a original dvd to back it up.
Now, the question is this chip more likely an origa chip? Another, question I was told that once installed the ps2 is prone to being fried, hence overheated if I play the ps2 to long. Is this true?
I was also told that the chip will not allow me to play PAL games? Is this true? I have yet to have a pal game to check this out. All I know is that I am able to play original USA, JAPanese PS2 games and backup games. The main purpose of this installation was to play original USA, JAP, and PAL games.
Can any of you guys answer my question?
Also is the only way I can play pal games is to backup up the original and patch it with the files available here?

first of all, shoot your source of information, it sucks.

the origa is a 28 pin chip, long and thin.. so I'd say you got an origa.
the origa will not cause anything to overheat.
original PAL games will work fine, but keep in mind the ps2 will output a PAL signal then, which will be in b/w on a ntsc-only tv. if your tv supports PAL or has a RGB scart socket, they'll work without problems.
if not, you can look for pal/ntsc patches and patch a backup of the game to make it work.

thank you for you reply. Now I can play the ps2 without worrying that my machine will burnout very easily. Yes, the chip is long and skinny (rectangle ship) and has this little orange thing pointing out.
I looked at the no. of connections (wires) and compared it with installation diagram from the origa site and noticed that I have much less wires attached. Also, I have tried a backup copy of pro evolution soccer (pal) and it does not boot up. All USA and JAP PS2 games work fine.
Could the lack of wires solder mean that he has forgot to solder the pal parts?
I had the brough the chip and had it installed for US$48.72, is that a bargain or expensive?
I am planning move the machine alot, how easily will it be for me to knock the wires off the chip? Or will it be safe in my ps2 original blue box?

just to point out, I asked the person who installed the i.c. for me, he told me that the ps2 will not easily burn out and the chip I have installed is an origa chip for my jap ps2.

Unfortunately, I had to take it for repair due to a wire dislodging itself and making it unable to play usa imports.

So to add to this make sure you don't shake your ps2 about when transporting the machine to your friends.

there are no "PAL parts", either it works or not at all.
make sure you looked at the right diagrams, the tutorial ones on the origa page are old and still required alot more wires than it does now.

Arakon, thanks for your help. The origa site says that I am able to play pal ps2 games, is it true? But not pal dvd's?

the NTSC PS2s are not able to display PAL DVDs, no chip is gonna fix that either.

as for PAL games, as I said, you need a RGB lead or PAL capable TV for them to display right.. but they do run.

no. it's technically impossible for a NTSC ps2 to output a PAL signal on DVD movies.

Does it work? I mean patching a pal game backup to ntsc can be played on a modded japan ps2?
Where can I find this patch program?

there should be some pal/ntsc patching tools.. there are also seperate patches for some games. it would work to get them to display properly.
