Having a nightmare with Iomega USB ZipCD - Help!

This is my third writer. Unreliable. Just tried to write off three psx backups, all three failed.

Mostly I get 'buffer underruns' at 92 - 97%, just now I got a fixation error.

I'm running Win2000, PII-400mhz processor, 128 ram, Vivastar discs.

Seems to write data (mp3 files mostly) to disc more reliably but hates doing PS games.

I'm using Easy CD Creator and occasionally Nero (have probs with both). Used to use CloneCD but seemed more unreliable.. now i'm not so sure. CDRWin won't even detect my writer.

Some error logs:

I've tried to copy Sim###ns Wrestling PSX twice. First time at 4x, then at 2x.

First Attempt:
--------------
T0100: I/O error (06/C5/00) - Write error - buffer underrun occurred
T0100: I/O error (06/C5/00) - Write error - buffer underrun occurred
T7118: TrackWriter error - Command retry failed

This occured at about 93% of write.

Second Attempt:
-----------------
D0100: I/O error (05/64/00) - Command error - illegal mode for this track
T0100: I/O error (06/C5/00) - Write error - buffer underrun occurred
T0100: I/O error (06/C5/00) - Write error - buffer underrun occurred
T7118: TrackWriter error - Command retry failed

Occured at 97% of write.

Another fail. This time a fixation error at 93%.

Now I'm in the shit big style. I did a 13 disc ##### with some fella and now I cant get his CDs ripped. #### #### ####.
This aint going to end well. Any advice?

I would suggest a couple of things to be the cause of your worries:

1) Win 2000.

Are your atapi drivers fully compatible with Win 2000? If it were me I'd use Win98 or WinME.

2). Disc cache.

Your buffer underruns suggest that not enough data is being sent to the writer quickly enough. Perhaps the fact that you're using a USB device may limit your record speed, but if the drive states it can record at 4x then it must be capable of it.

What are the "Vcache" settings in your system.ini file (Start_Run_sysedit_Enter). With 128MB or RAM I use:

[vcache]
MinFileCache=4096
MaxFileCache=16384

This helps keep the SECONDARY DISC CACHE necley filled up, which further helps your writer's buffer as there is a consant supply of data which won't be screwed if your run other programs at the same time, to a certain extent.

If you fancy an easier way of messing with the Vcache settings, then a good program to try is Mem Turbo - you can optimise it for different roles and it has a nice help file.

3. Multitasking!

What other programs are you running at the same time? Try and keep things like Microsoft Find fast at bay by disabling them in your Startup Folder (may be different with Win2000). Running other programs can seriously bog down your system - especially screen savers!

4. Win 2000 File System

Win2000 uses the NTFS file system, which is different to Win98's FAT or FAT32 system. Now I'm not sure if I'm 100% right, but this could be giving you some gripe, especially with your CD-R programs.

5. More than one CD-R Program!

Easy CD Creator doesn't like other programs like Nero, to be on hard drive at the same time! Certain verson of EasyCD will clash with the likes of NEro, and will cause you problems.

I really wouldn't recommend Easy CD Creator for PSX games, or anything really that's protected. It WILL NOT back them up - even the cracked one's. I had no success with ESCD v3.5 Deluxe AND it had the nasty habbit of running Direct CD in the background whenever I loaded Windows.

I use Nero 5.0.2.8 and CloneCD 2.7.8.1. The nice bit with CloneCD is the help file - there's a big list of which drives work best, and people are sending in results all the time. However some writers are better at backing up games than others - even with the best copying programs. I use CloneCD for PSX and Dreamcast titles, most of which have already been "cracked".

Hope this helps, sorry I don't have any more info for you, just suggestions.

Nero 6.6.1.25 gives me Fixation and Burn Errors!

Hi, folks!

I too have similar problem on LG GCE-8320B CD-RW. I used media like Moser Baer, Verbatim, Sony, TDK and else. Until recently everything went really fine. I updated firmvare to 1.04, IDE controllers, and tried to burn at slower range too. Nothing helped. Fixation errors still keep making me nervous...and CD´s are not so cheap, right?
Oh yes, just yesterday I have found out that lowering writing speed would make 2 burning session "succesfull", which means that could read file but error message was still ther: "Burn session failed at 12x..."
Any suggestions?

Here is my nero´s log:
