How do you save a game in GTA3?(not a warez version)

I was wondering at what point the game will let you save and how you do it.
This is a regular retail version of the game I am running and I don't know when you save the game.

is this some kind of joke?? It tells u right at the start of the game (when u escape the prison bound truck) how to save your game. Keep a look out for the info screens that appear at top left of your screen. AND the 'I' icons that are placed in important areas.

Look, there's a hideout, right ? It's marked with an icon on your minimap, it's in the red light district. You've got a door, and right next to it a garage door that opens when you approach it with your vehicle. If you go through the normal door, your game should be saved.

Almost forgot : you CANNOT save when a mission is active. Fail or win the mission and then check out your hideout, door should be open.
