Talking can some1 answer a few ?? for me please

im going to be switching over to 360 from my ps2 (put it off long enuff). any i have some questions that after searching still dont have clear answers on.

1. can i put a bigger aftermarket hdd in the xbox the way i have in the ps2? or does it need to be the xbox hdd? if so how? (link)

2. i see i can get a chip or flash the drive, assuming i have moderate time and skills, whats the best way to go? id think flash is riskier, but more readily updatable so better, but dont wanna brick the 360. what does unsigned code mean? if i flash the drive i wont be able to play original xbx discs?

3. is backing up a disc as ez as for the ps2? ie ..decrypter read/write..thats it?? or is it way more invovled

4. and lastly does a flash or chipping take away the ability to use xbl??

ANY answers are appreciated

1 no the 360 drives have digital signature so only a 20gb or 120gb drive will work and you still need to dump the signed sector from a ms 360 drive

2 flashing is better, unsigned code is homebrew and you can still play xbox 1 games

3 you either need to have a 360 drive hooked up to your pc or use a hotswap disc then patch the image with the security sectors then burn it to a dvd dl

4 i hear some modded fw's are getting banned and some are not

@ Snake: Largely agree mate, but there have been a few updates with regards to backup procedures (point 3)

1. Not yet possible

2. Flashing is the way to go - You'll still be able to use your original 360 and XB1 discs (providing the XB1 game is supported with the backwards compatibility update). However, XB1 backups no longer function under iXtreme firmwares.

3. It is providing you use a Samsung SH-D162C PC-DVD ROM Drive in combination with Xbox Backup Creator (and there are several other compatible Samsung PC DVD-ROM Drives available - all for little money) and upgrade the firmware on the drive with the 'Kreon v1.0' firmware (easily found on the net). It's just like updating the Fw. on your DVD-RW drive - easy and takes 5 mins

P.S. Xbox Backup Creator is freeware and easily found on the net (latest version is 2.7). With this setup, put the disc in, hit Start and make your image ala. PS2 . Once complete, simply burn with resulting image file back to a DVD+R DL disc, again just like with PS2. Easy huh?

4. You should be fine with XBL using the Xtreme firmwares. The recent banning spates have been for discs which have invalid video partitions, DMI, PFI and SS Sector information (i.e. Downloaded ISO images) - and not detection of the firmware itself as first thought.

However it's always a good idea to stick with the iXtreme firmware versions to be on the safe side as they prevent improper discs booting and therefore prevents getting you banned (although this should only really apply to people using backups they made in the infancy of the Xtreme firmware days which can now be detected).

thanks alot for the replies guys, its starting to become more clear now. i was reading up last night and that helped too. so do i have this close to correct?: make an iso of my orig disc, the xbx hooks up to the pc with some kinda adapter that i CAN buy. pacth that image with whatever ( i imagine the files and a patch tool are reaily available when i need them?) burn the image to dvd9 and pop it in the 360 and play because i flashed the dvd drive in the xbx with some firmwhere thats also readily available? i think i could disassemble/reassemble my ps2 ith my eyes closed by now, so i feel comfortable with all that, and i do have to take apart the xbx right? and lastly (again) 1 thing i read a few places lst night and cant figure out. i need to hook up the console and pc each time to backup a game, do i have to reflash the dvd drive each time i connect it to the pc? maybe i misunderstood. again thanks

Not quite - not far off, but not quite.

You'll need to disassemble the 360 to take the DVD-ROM out just the once to flash it with the iXtreme firmware. This can then be put back in the 360 which can then be permanently left alone if you so wish.

In the early days, you had to use the 360 DVD-ROM every time you wanted to back up and that meant disassembling the 360 and reflashing the firmware every time you needed to make an image - which was a pain in the arse, lol

As I say though, now that isn't required. If you purchase one of those Samsung PC DVD-ROM Drives (there are now several compatible models - a quick search on Google will reveal the exact model numbers) and install it in your PC, you can flash a 'Kreon' firmware to it. The latest version is v1.0 and this allows you to use one of those Samsung DVD-ROM drives to make straight images of a 360 or Xbox 1 disc as you would do with a PS2 disc when combined with the Xbox Backup Creator software (latest version 2.7).

All you then have to do is put the disc in, open XBC and hit the Start button. Select somewhere to save the image and it'll do its thing, ripping all the required sectors and images etc from the disc and spitting out a CloneCD Compatible '.DVD' image file at the end. This can then simply be burned to a blank DVD+R DL disc and played in the 360.

The Samsung drives are really cheap to buy and can be left in your PC, so you don't have to mess around disassebling the 360 all the time, or hotswapping discs, lol - in fact, it doubles as a nice Region Free DVD-ROM Drive for your PC too so that's a nice bonus.

So in short:
  • You only disassemble the 360 once to flash with the Xtreme firmware
  • Purchase one of those Samsung DVD-ROM Drives and install in your PC
  • Flash the Samsung DVD-ROM with the Kreon v1.0 firmware
  • Download and install Xbox Backup Creator 2.7
  • Download and Install CloneCD (latest version is preferable)
  • Buy some blank DVD+R DL Discs and you're away

so i got the 360 --loving it!!, read up on flashing the drive, just research at this point, i havent bought anything yet. it was starting to look understandable to me, then i cecked my 360 drive...benq. is that drive flashable without soldering/cutting any connections on the board?? i wont attempt any soldering myself..thats why i sent the ps2 to norcal, so if it does need soldering, with no ez (like samsung) flashing in development near release..should i just send it to get chipped? if so where?

thanks
