What video format should I use ?

I would like to find a video format that works with both an Ipod video and a RCA Lyra x3030 media player. MP4 files work on both but the sound is not compatable on the RCA Lyra X3030 when using MP4, just video.
I've been using CloneDVD mobil to convert my movie and TV show files for both of these but I end up doing it twice account of putting them in MP4 format for my wifes Ipod and generic (Divx) format for my RCA Lyra X3030 to make everything work on both units. Converting the same thing twice is a real pain.

I can't see what audio format that Lyra supports but, if you ask me, the most common and most supported format should be XviD for video and (CBR?) MP3 for audio.

What a good program to convert files to XviD for video and (CBR?)?? And this works on an Ipod video also?

Absolutely no idea about what format these handhelds actually accept; it was just an idea, knowing that XviD is becoming a "even de facto-er" standard than DivX did before...

I'm using the GordianKnot package for converting DVD's and TV recordings to XviD+MP3/AC3 rips. However, it is not for beginners - I struggled with it for several weeks until I managed to make it do something sensible -, you might be better off with some more automized software such as AutoGordianKnot (don't know these very well)...

Oh, to clear up something: MP4, DivX and XviD are more or les the same; they are just different implementations of the MPEG-4 standard.

Thats what I thought but the sound part of the MP4's don't work with the RCA player (Says unsupported sound format) although Divx and Xvid work great with it I'm pretty sure the Ipod can't play those types of files.

MP4's might be inside Quicktime containers: a file with a MOV/QT structure, the video stream compressed with the MP4 codec, the audio with... no idea. Dunno how those are supposed to work.

Do you have a small sample file I could have a look into? Please, upload it somewhere...

Hopefully I have the right e-mail address for [email protected] Anyway I sent a sample file to you and this is what I wrote in the e-mail so everyone can read it incase someone can help me out here.



This file was converted to MP4 format so its usable on an IPod, but the audio part of the file is not supported by the RCA media player I talked about. I used ANY VIDEO CONVERTER to convert this file to MP4 format hoping files coverted in this style would be useable on both a video Ipod and an RCA Lyra X3030. The video will play fine on both devices but the audio is not supported by the RCA unit and inturn will not play sound on that unit. I've also used Clone DVD mobile to convert MP4 files that are both compatable for an IPOD and a Sony PSP (Playstation Portable) but the RCA device does not support the sound format part of these MP4s either.

Hmmm, stupid me, I should've told you to start with MPlayer, the magical "plays anything you throw at it" media player, anyway... It says - watch the console output for its log - that the movie is in a Quicktime/MOV container, the video stream is encoded with MPEG-4 and the audio stream with AAC (MPEG-2/4 Advanced Audio Coding).

Yes, AAC is not a well-supported format! You should either find another movie converter (tough luck, there are so many of them around, with so many advantages and disadvantages!) or try to change the settings of this one (audio settings, from AAC to something else, most compatible: MP3, or fully named "MPEG-1 audio layer 3").

The settings on both the programs I use are VERY basic, there is no where the sound output of a video file can be change. Does anyone have a suggestion on a program I should try?

As I wrote you, try AutoGordianKnot. It may not be as configurable as GordianKnot - that I use - but, consequently, it won't make you struggle with the conversion either.
