Question Question on holding Mod Chip in Place

Im going to install the Matix Infinity this week on my version 9 PS2 but I wanted to know how and where do I place this chip? What I'm trying to say is do I glue the chip down with a hot glue gun or tape it down? Please help me out with the following questions:

1. Where do I place the actual chip so that it does not interfere with any components or so I won't have trouble closing the ps2?

2. What should I put in between the ps2 board and the chip so that it doesn't make contact with the board?

3. Should I glue the wires down with the hot glue gun or use double sided tape?

Please help me out. Thanks .

I use double sided tape, As far as the other info it would probably be easier for you to look at the post, 'Lets see everyones mod installs'. Spedmetal and Netmech have some nice install pictures. As they say, A picture is worth a thousand words

Place the chip in the standard position (at the top of the board where there isn't anything other than a load of VIAs). I place insulation tape down first, then stick the chip to that, and then more insulation on the top of the chip and over the connection points to stop any of those grounding out. It works well for me. Only on the V10s do you have to place the chips elsewhere on the board...

If your going to use double sided tape to attach the chip to the motherboard, use the kind that is very thin. Not much thicker then 2 pieces of paper. You dont want the chip to come in contact with the ground plate and short out. Also use electrical tape to cover the under side of the ground plate right above the chip also, like Lufcfan said to insulate it from touching the ground plate.

If you want you can use hot glue to hold the chip down but be sure and only use two blobs on either end so you can remove it easily if need be. You must be careful if you use hot glue though because the via's on the back of the mod chip can still come in contact with components on the motherboard when you push the chip down into the glue and the glue spreads away.

Good luck!

Thanks for the help guys . I will do the soldering tonight. Where can I find the thin double layer tape to hold down the chip? Do I solder first and then place it or tape it down first? I'm thinking that the heat from the solder might weaken the tape if I tape down first.

I am also looking for a good pic of the romeo mod for a v9 ps2 where I can see where I solder the leg of the chip to. In other words where is the 5v voltage point that I have to solder to. See this pic. http://cyber-mag.com/station/laserV9.htm Is that wire the same one that goes under the board (looking at the v9 romeo mod) and what leg is it? I think its the 4th leg from the bottom up but I'm not sure. Please help.

If you look at the picture I linked to above, you can see the Rome mod at the top of the picture, once you have your board in front of you reference my picture and you will easily see where the 5V source is. Its the third leg up from the bottom that you lift on the LA chip. There is no wire that goes under the board if you do it like the Romeo mod like the one in my picture. You might be able to get the 3M tape from a harware or office supply store. Stick it down first, the heat from the iron wont effect it at all.

lol... i just used electrical tape and wrapped the tape in a circle so it would be a makeshift double sided tape it is sorta elevated so the chip doesnt touch the board, and also it seems pretty secure

Yeah you can do that, just make sure not to use too much to get too big a loop on the tape, otherwise you can push it up to the groundplate

Smile

I used a healthy blob of silicone and pressed the chip down into it, left it alone for an hour or so to let the silicone go off, then started soldering. I'm a maintenance electrician so I have access to electrical grade silicone at work which is what I used but any kind will do, bathroom sealant etc.

PS2 v9
Romeo mod
Matrix Infinity v1.3
works great
