Getting the "loading" error with vice city, but only this console.

NTSC 39001 serial U6.
Vice City back-up on Ritek DVD-R. Burned with Recordnow Max 4.5 @ 1x.
I'm getting both the "loading" screen while playing, & the "Error reading Vice City DVD".

The backup works fine on another 39001 serial AU.

Both consoles chipped with messiah 2 pro.

Another interesting bit of info. I've been playing Vice City with the original, I've gotten the "Error reading Vice City DVD" (or something) 4 or 5 times within an hour.

Any ideas ? Bum PS2 ?

Sounds like your laser isn't in good shape. Try a laser cleaning disc.

I beleive Charlie_PS2 talked about this not too long ago...

If I remember correctly..... Some of the V7's when they are shipped from $ony, have lasers that were poorly set from the factory......

May just need to re-adjust...... Maybe Charlie_PS2 will see this post and reply....

Yes you remember correctly BG. Some v7 lasers do need a little adjustment before working properly with backups, but if he is getting this error with the original as well, it could be a dirty laser. I would try cleaning it before adjusting anything.

I've cleaned the laser a few times already. I'm using a Philips Magnovox 6 brush cleaning disk for DVD players.

By adjusting the laser, do you mean the laser angle ? Or do you mean the DVD pot adjustment ?

I beleive it was the angle...... BUT don't hold me to that....

BEFORE you do anything, try send Charlie_PS2 a message.... He knows ALOT more about it than I do....

Before you dive into adjusting the lazer itself try altering the height
by turning the large white cog at the back of the lazer tray
this will increase or decrease the height of the lazer
but mark it and try one or two clicks at a time
clockwise to lift the lazer
anticlockwise to lower

I sent Charlie an email last night.

Hopefully he'll give me some insight.

I had the same problems with GTA 3. I had my ps2 on my bed and this would happen. Since then I leave it on my floor, never have any problems since. Need to keep it on a flat surface. Just an idea

I re-burned Vice City onto a TDK DVD-RW. It ran flawlessly. I'm drawing the conclusion that the laser is picky, and wants high quality media for streaming games like VC.

BTW Dust, what does the white cog adjust ?? I know about the azimuth (heigth adjustment), but I don't know about what the cog adjusts.

** EDIT **

Nevermind. Just read the post by Charlie about parallax adjustment. Seems simple enough.

Is it a matter of trial and error ?
