I had this problem too, but before I decided to go online for help, I actually read the readme file from the game directory, which told me the same answer!!! It saved me hours of trawling the internet for the answer......so, perhaps there's a lesson there!
Hi

This is what I found in the readme

ć Muffled audio or looping audio when EAX is enabled: Certain sound cards are not EAX compatible. Please check to see if your sound card supports EAX. If you have enabled EAX in your sound options, and you noticed that your weapons sound muffled of certain sound effects are repeating then your card most likely does not support this feature. Disabling EAX in the sound options menu should clear up the audio problems.

I could'nt get to the sound options let alone disable the EAX Option

Well either your copy came with a different readme file, or you didn't look hard enough. Paragraph 1.3 Known Issues reads as follows;
If you suffer a crash as you start-up Hitman 2 you should try adding the text “EaxDisable” (without quotes) at the bottom of the Hitman2.ini file that you will find in your Hitman 2: Silent Assassin directory. This will disable the testing of EAX on your sound card and is a known workaround for the SB PCI 128 sound card.
How much clearer does it need to be?

Well,
sorry Smiffy23 but the Baron is right. I've got the german version and it's exactly the translation of the Text the baron has posted:
Quote:
Maybe Smiffy you have a different version as we have. It is possible!!! And by the way: how old are you both to argue with each other via the internet???
