Burnt games damage DC's?

I've heard that playing copied DC games causes the laser carriage to die prematurely. My question is why does this occur, and does it apply to boot discs only, or do self-booting games also have this affect?

if you're gonna whine about burning out your laser buy the damn game, burnt games were not intended to play on dreamcast (notice i said burnt games not pressed games)
when in doubt buy it
