wireless lan
I have a wlan card in my laptop and I am trying to connect it to my desktop computer without a wlan card in it is this possible?

Not possible.
Both, your Laptop and your desktopPC need a WLan-Adapter.

or a router with wlan, where the desktop could be connected via a cable
