Question Rise of Legends copy protection???

I have been able to back up my disks and run the game with the backup disk without any cracks.

This never happens. I always need some sort of fixed exe or nocd to run with my backup disk. It acts as though there is no copy protection, but I am sure that can't be true.

Just wondering if anyone else has had this experience with the game or has some insight into why this has happened.

Update..............

I scanned the exe on the disk with Protection ID 5.1 and it says:

[!] SmartE Copy Protection detected!

Also, I used CloneCD 4.0.1.3 to back up the disks.

IIRC most (all ?) Microsoft games use this, and a simple clone (or even just a disk copy) will work. At least MS are doing that one better than the other publishers with their damn SF

Yes, Smarte only stops the complete noobs from copying, which seems to be enough for Microsoft. And maybe that is not such a bad strategy. Quality games sell, no matter how well or bad they are copy protected. Age Of Empires III has been cloned and cracked several days before the official release, but it was one of the best selling games when it reached the stores.

And nice to see you here again, Rincewind

You should've hex-edited the necessary file to change the warning message to something funnier. Also, perhaps, M$ is using simple copy protections because they cannot afford to buy more professional ones like Starforce; or, perhaps, they don't have enough people at the user support department to solve the usual problems of (even legitimate users of products protected by) Starforce.
