Laptop Issue

Hi,
I have an older Compaq Presario 1694 K62-450 Laptop and it has been working fine but, recently when I go to start it up all I get is a flashing light on the power inverter and the power light and plug in light on the machine will flash.
I looked to see if the cord had come off the motherboard as it is hard wired to it. The laptop gets moved alot and might have been set down roughly a time or two. I have looked at Compaq's web site for a schematic to see if something has come unhooked but, had no luck.
I tried removing the battery and pressing the power button to discharge the capacitors and them tried just the cord and it does the same thing.
Also the machine smells a little hot around whare the cord goes inside.
Any heelp would be appreciated.
I hate to have to roll out the $$ for a new one .
Thanks,
Tj
