Arg!

Just when I thought I knew what i was doing....

I was going to go buy a Magic V chip for my ps2 (i know, i tend to procrastinate) and then a friend of mine tells me the Neo 12 chip is a much better option since the chip takes less wires/time to solder and is just as good. I trust my friend, but he's not the one who will be at a loss if the chip sucks. I'm asking the gurus of this forum to direct me. what is better? The Magic V or the Neo12? Or is there a completely different chip i should buy that is equaly priced?

Thanks again

Although I haven't got any experience with any other chips, I can speak for the Magic V as far as performance.

This chip rocks dude. All 38 games in my collection have been backed up, and boot 100% every time, quicker than the originals did. I've not had any problems with any game, no matter the age. Of course, I'm not speaking about dual layered stuff. However, everything that can be backed up, has been on my Magic V and it's great.

Yep. Magic V is a great chip, Duo or Duo2 is another good choice priced about the same.

This may seam petty to some people, but the neo12 uses free code developed by the magicICE team that is intended to be free and the maker of this chip has stolen it and used it in there production chips with out even a complement that I know of to the magicICE team. However this is nothing new and has been going on for years now with not only code from the magicICE team but just about all other chips you can mention. Also they could have chosen another name as they are far from the original neo team.

My main concern with the neo12 is its flexible PCB and the funky way you solder it to the tinny via's that are already difficult to solder to with wire, seams to me like it would be even more difficult to solder and get an iron in the PCB and get a good bond with the via’s but hey what do I know *cough*. It seams flimsy and not reliable, not to mention it looks like crap, but hey who really cares what it looks like other then an installer as no one is going to see it when its all said and done anyway.

I would say stay with the tried and true ORIGINALS like the Magic V, Duo, Apple Pro if your looking in the low end range of chips, or the Infinity and DMS3 if your interested in the higher end.

wow. thanks guys. im glad i asked.

The Neo 12s biggest selling point its its fewer wires, but when looking at the chip, i see 21 solder points, each one having a designated spot on the board. oh well. i dont care anymore, im not getting it.

Thanks again guys! Magic V it is for me!

ok, another quick question. I bought the majority of my supplies today, but ran into a few snags with the wire and solder.

I shopped local home improvement stores, and they didnt have crap for what i needed. so after pondering, i tried the local Radio Shack. This was the closest stuff to what i thought i needed:

Solder: .015 dia. 62/26/2 Silver Bearing Solder. Stuff is thin as hell, but the points are tiny as wel.

Wire:22 gauge Stranded wire for the Power and reset buttons. It seems to be Type: AWM, dunno if itll still work.

Wire2:30 gauge Kynar Insulated Wrapping wire.

I tried going by what the Ultimate Info Sticky told me, but this was the best i could find. Will it work?
