CDvdCSS:Read Failed!

Hi all,

I have been having problems backing up The Usual Suspects DVD Movie that I own. First of all, I have had no problems backing up any of my DVD's except this one.

It's region 1 CSS Protected. I do my usual rip with DVD Shrink but this time I get this error: "CDvdCSS:Read Failed! Incorrect Function". I thought it's a CSS protection issue but I downloaded DVD Region-Free but I still have the error.

So I used an alternative. I used DVD Decrypter and I still get an error stating "I/O Error....Illegal Mode For This Track".

So something is wrong here but I don't know what it is. There's no big scratch or dirt! And that's why I am asking for your help guys. Thanx

***Here are some useful stuff: I used Windows XP, DVD Shrink 2.3 and 3.1 (dvd copy software), DVD Region-Free 3.50, and I use either my Pioneer 106 DVD-+RW drive or my ATAPI DVD-ROM drive.

Ok first off "DVD Region free" isnt your problem solver here. Thats a different story.

Next, you were on the right track by getting DVDDecypter. Im suprised that it didnt work either. Im guessing your last choice would be to use AnyDVD. It basically turns off the CSS flags and other things on your drive.

Try with both your reader and your 106.

Ok before I install any other program, what do you think is the problem? I have never had this problem with any dvd. i always rely on DVD SHrink and DVD Decrypter. I tried with both drives and same results. I still get the same error messages? Very very wierd!

Well it either really could be a CSS problem or it could be a botched disc. Ive had that problem before and there is no way around it. Its just a disc that has a legit glitch from the factory.

I QUIT! lol. Yeah it's very frustrating since this never happens. I am guessing that this is a botched, bad, and cheap DVD. Too bad thogh because The Usual Suspects is an awesome movie, gonna only have to watch it on my dvd player not on PC

Sorry to hear that. Ive personally had that with 2 dvd movies and 3 PS2 games. In one instance a ps2 cdr had a warp on it. Wreaked havoc on my PC.

Go ahead & install AnyDVD you will love it I have had it for 6 months or more with out a problem. I have friends that wont stop thanking me for telling them about it. Try it on that movie they have a free 21 day trail. It might help you with your problem because you dont have to rip to the drive. you can use any DVD burning program you what with it on the fly. This way you can use Clone DVD or Nero. Then just copy the move only. I have found that a lot of read error & incompadablitys are in the menu file ,extras & audio tracks. So only copy the english audio & try the 2 channel & 5.1 seperatly. With anydvd you can also use windows explorer & drag & drop each file in the TS folder one at a time to your hard drive. That way you might get the main movie file off the disc then use Nero's burn video files to DVD setting to burn it. Also useing anydvd you can use nero image drive. Use the setting copy dvd to image drive & nero will burn the complete DVD-9 movie to the hard drive without compression 7or 8 Gb of it. Now as long asyou keep that image file mounted in the nero image drive (virtual DVD player ) any program you have will think it is a real DVD but all the copy right suff is all ready removed. If you just want to have the back up to use on the PC try nero digital recode 2 & make make it into a Mpeg- 4. on one CD (I like the qualty with 2 CD aac 5.1 setting on the home theater profile ) Hey well good luck!!
