Gangland uses Starforce3, and a particularly nasty incarnation of it at that! There may be a NOCD in the future (Like Trackmania), but that will only work once you have installed the game from the original CD. I can't ever see a crack coming that will let you make a backup of the game to install without the original. Looks like the Hackers have finally been defeated.

you really should stop making statements that you know absolutely nothing about as you'll only be made to look like a fool later

Maybe the install Exe's can be cracked, in a similar fashion to many of the earlier Westwood Studios games, but it all comes down to whether the Hackers can be bothered to go back and work on these older games. Trackmania has been out for months in the UK, so I can't see a fixed install Exe being released, if indeed it is possible to make one, and of a reasonable size (I've seen some Tages hacks recently coming in at 400mb!).

I know Dead to Rights had a 350mb file. There is a small crack file available, but if you install from a backup rather than the original, funny things happen later in the game. The thing is, with crack files that big, that let you install the game, the downloaded file is so large you're getting into Warez territory.

a fixed install was made, for the warez release, too bad if you cant get it, remember the crack teams do NOT support ppl making their own personal backups, their cracks are designed for the releases they did, and arent really intended to be stripped out and released as stand alone...the 400mb crack you speak of was dead to rights (which wasnt tages, you are quite consistant in making up completely inaccurate statements arent you).. it was 400mb simply because of the starforce3 virtual file system where 400mb of files werent present on the cd, so they had to be recreated and supplied.. next time you make a statement please for christ sake research what you intend to state and make sure its accurate

400 mb crack? Tagés? Really? Oh, I think I saw Elvis today at Burgerking, yeah, he had his best pal Jesus with him....looked like a real couple....yup..it was awesome..

Man, you really should check your "sources" for some proper info
and stop this bs about "hackers are defeated"

The cracking teams ownz the f*cking game industry, some games doesn't even get to the stores before they're cracked...even though they're protected with the "latest copykiller" but keep on whining, it sure will add more famous quotes to the Tagés homepage...

I never said Dead to Rights used Tages. I was referencing a file I've seen for Beyond Good and Evil. That's beside the point anyway. Most NOCD cracks are originally created for the cracking groups own RIPS, and find their way onto sites such as this (You only have to read many of the included Readme files to see this). We use these files to allow us to make personal backups. It is assumed that we own the original, mainly because if we had illegally downloaded the full game, we would have the crack included in that file. You could see a NOCD as partly Warez from that extent, but I see no harm if you have bought the original. Starforce3 HAS made making a backup for the legitimate buyer a lot harder, as it's no longer a case of making a CD backup and using a NOCD crack. You now rely on the original in order to install the game, and Starforce3 is very picky. I had a TINY scratch on my Trackmania CD, and it wouldn't install. The shop did replace it, but only out of goodwill. This wouldn't have been a problem with other CD's, as I could have installed them from a backup if a problem with the original arose, which has happened a few times, particularly on older CD's. CD's are just not as hardy as many are led to believe. Now my Trackmania and Gangland CD's are hanging around my Desktop, within easy reach of my 3 year old or cup of spilt Tea. With many of these protections, you don't feel you OWN the game, but rather it's on lease to you until the CD gives up the ghost. It's a double edged sword that we sometimes use crackers code to allow us to play our originals without the CD or a backup, but I believe it's our god given right to make a backup, even if the Law says not. I'm not interested in point scoring my knowledge over other users, I'm sure you know much more than me regarding CD protection. All I'm trying to do is make a backup of the games which I've spent my hard earned money on. OK, my 'Hackers are defeated' is plainly wrong, as anything can be cracked eventually. Maybe I'm trying to spur the crackers on into making a fixed Install. A nocd is better than nothing, as the original can be kept safely away, but it's only a halway house if you still need the original to install the game, and this Starforce protection is going to take off I feel. Maybe then hackers will have generic templates to crack the protection, and nocd's will be a commonplace as Securerom/Safedisc, though I doubt it very much.

spur the crackers on.. bad idea, cos u gotta realise the crackers simply do not give 2 ****s about the end user or the person making their backup, the crackers make the crack for their cracked/warez'd release.. thats where the buck stops, the crackers do not support their files being ripped out and distributed on sites such as gcw, or ppl ripping off their work and claiming it as their own, or distributing the cracks ripped out of the main release on p2p networks..

as for generic templates, i'd suggest you go research starforce then you might realise that a generic template is out of the question considering each game is different

as for your gangland or trackmania cd sitting on your desktop waiting to your child to wreck it or spill tea on it or whatever, that simply is your own problem, if you're stupid enough to leave your cd's sitting out in such an environment then you're simply asking for trouble

I don't believe it is my problem. CD media is Volatile at best, and until a more reliable Data storage method becomes available I think we should be allowed to make a back-up. I mean PC gaming is a convoluted business already, what with Viruses, Upgrades, Tweaking etc, without making our life a misery in the CD media department as well. Just last week I had to mess with BWA files and Alcolhol 120 just to get a 2.99 Sold Out range of Deus X to run properly. There must be a better way. Maybe Game product activation or something. Bring back the dongle, that's what I say!

heh i wonder how much added mayhem a dongle would cause, and how much it'd add onto the game cost, you'd end up with a drawer full of dongles, it'd be madness and yep cd media is volatile granted, but leaving it on desktops, in open sunlight, direct heat etc isnt really good for it either , end result is tho sadly the games company once they've made their sale really dont care about you any more

Don't forget that the power is in your pocket, if you don't buy the game the company loose money....if the game doesn't work in your standard CD-rom, return it to the shop and claim your money back =company looses money + bad publicity....if they don't give support = return game..bla bla...

Oh, and especially if it's a JoWoot game....guys, give it up, the protection scheme(s) sucks or at least try to improve the antidebugging sh*t
