Verbatim strikes again

Right. I am still at a loss as to why these dvd-r are such a popular choice. I got bitten by them a while back but after reading several recent reviews and having had several PS2's around to test them on I was disapointed yet again.I decided to order 25 Standard dvd-r.

First was the colour line-up. Comparison was Choice DVD-R(YUK!), Very light purple, almost silver write surface, Traxdata 4X very dark purple write surface and Verbatim which are somewhere in the middle. Next five test burns: These were Tony Hawks Underground, Resident Evil Dead Aim, Need for speed underground, SSX 3 and Manhunt.

Resident Evil seemed to boot up fine first time and gameplay was okay. Tony Hawks Underground wouldn't boot. After 5 attempts and some wierd laser sounds I gave up. SSX 3 booted but the video sequences were jumping and skipping around like mad. Didn't bother with the other two. These were tested on a version 5,7 and 9 and burned using RecordNowDX and a pioneer 106. I have working backups of above games on traxdata that work flawlessly.

So why do people still have so much good stuff to say about verbatim dvd-r. I've tried them twice now with two different burners and 3 different ps2's and they just don't do the job.

Verbatim datalife plus CDR are tops. DVD-R suck. Traxdata is without a doubt a better buy.

I'm still using Verbatim DVD-R's for backing up my DVD movies but I'm looking for a new supplier for my PS2 DVD's. You mentioned Traxdata, do you know of a cheap stockist in the UK who I could try?

yeah i personally think the verbs arent good bang for buck considering their error rates and price compared to other DVD-Rs. I bought 3 and they worked okay but the error rates were almost 3 times as high as my cheaper TDK's (taiyo yuden made). i might consider them if they were way cheaper.

Just to confirm that it isn't the burner I am using I also had exactly the same problem with my pioneer 104. Backed up same 5 games to traxdata 4X yesterday afternoon at 4X on traxdata an they work flawlessly, no skips in movies, all load fast an first time, all make same noise as original when loading. Verbs just don't cut it an anyone who is using them with sucess is probably putting unnecessary strain on their laser.

Regards

Are you loco? Just kiddin.

Why would you want traxdata imported when you can get Ritek/Ridata much easier. They are basically the same disc bud.

I have to disagree with the Verb comments. I use DataLife DVD-R and they are both faster and quieter than my Ritek backups - and even they were quiet!

I guess it is down to what works for some, doesn't work so well for others. I use a V4R PS2 modded with Messiah 1 and burning with a Pioneer 104 Fw 1.41 @ 2x.

but otto's dvd-rs are made by Mitsubishi chemicals and urs are by CMC, one of the worst cd/dvd manufacturers. i think u should try Kprobe to test ur dvdr burns, if u have a liteon dvdrom or burner that is.

Funny you should mention testing it, because I did test the error rates on the Verbatim and the Ritek - and the Verb had a lower error rate!
