Sony's DRX510UL is the best burner I think. All though most people here will say the Pioneer.A05 or A06 is the best. The thing I love about Sony's drive is, it will burn both - and +, and Sony was the first to come out with it.

There really isn't any difference between + and -. The only real difference is a - burner wont burn to + and a visa-versa. The PS2 seems to like the - better than + midea types.

On the down side to the Sony is it dose cost more than the Pioneer.

Pioneer A05 or A04 if u can find one, or A06 i hear is good. Some others will sugest the Sony or LG ones, but Pioneer is know to work well. There is a cheaper vers of it made by someone tho i forget who its basically a pioneer in a dif box.

Best media is Riteks IMO, and - for for Pioneer standard, and sony created+. Im leaving out a lot of the details lol. Anyways most things these days (including later vers ps2's) can run both + and -, but if u cant afford a dual burner id go with - works with all ps2 games and movies I have tested.

Don't buy a Sony burner.

I can't believe that people, knowing FULL WELL how terrible the lasers in Sony PS2's are, would willingly buy another Sony laser device.

Guess what? The laser in a Sony CD burner or DVD burner is NO BETTER BUILT THAN THE ONE IN THE PS2 THAT DIES WITH REGULAR USE!

Also the Quality Control is horrible. For every happy smiley satisfied Sony customer with a DRU510, you'll find another one who can't make it work at all. My personal Sony success rate (with a dozen drives) is 50%. That's REALLY REALLY LOW.

If you're burning -R, Pioneer is the way to go. If you're burning +R, NEC (or NEC-based) is the way to do.

AVOID dual-media burners, they're pricey and have media issues.

I got my PS2 modded and the laser is weak as all hell appearantly - so weak now that it wont seem to pick up dvdr's now, so I can attest that the laser reading discs is a big issue, especially when choosing media. I got some Great Quality dics, and while I'm sure theyll read nicely from ym dvd player, the PS2 hasnt been able to pick up a damn thing.

What version PS2 do you have? I would definately try a different brand media. The first ever cd-rw discs I bought back in the day were Great Quality. Talk about a deceiving name. My burner wouldn't even recognize them. I will never try their brand again. Try some higher quality media such as Ritek, Verbatim, or TDK.

It's a version 4 (that looks like a version 5 - got suckered on that one twice - my fault for not remembering that), and appearantly these lasers wear out fast or dont read dvd-r's very well. But I got the mod anyway cause it seemed to be picking up backups tested (thought it wasnt consistent). Basically the laser seems to be ass- although it was working a month or so ago.

But yea its a version4 with a version5 id. The cd's that ran great in the modders store were Optodiscs. I have great quality, and i made a 1-1 of Suikoden 3 (no adjustments to Record Max's settings), and wouldnt read in my machine. But the action replay and gameshark i've been using read like gangbusters (even though I had to set the ps2 upside down. . .yea i know). So I'm either going to try to find a place that can replace my laser (although I've been told v4 laser just is not good at reading ps2 dvd-r's), or just get another ps2 and sell the one i got. :/

If you get a new laser you are still stuck with a v4. This is why I don't recommed modding anything less than a v5, so you don't have laser probs down the road. If you want hastle free gameplay get a new v7.

I got one. Works fine for me - fast too - full DVD in like 40 minutes. Although BIGHaP says Cendyne is good and FRYS has a CENDYNE which is basically a PIONEER for like 30 bucks less than a A05, PLUS another 30 dollar rebate.

I was talking to a guy in the store and he said that some of these other products TAKE pioneers that dont pass like one of their standards tests, and just repackages them w/o changing anything. So a CYNDYNE might write a 2 instead of 4 but then you're saving an assload of cash in the process.

Its all up to you. Some friends of mine have have Sony's burner and they love it just as I do. I nor any one I know have had any probs. with them at all. I guess if people wouldn't try and hack the firnware they would still be working for them. Now I can't say that about the other dual burner bands out there b/c I havnt had no need to run out and buy one b/c my Sony works great. I wouln't trade it for any other band of burner, even though I'm not a Sony fan (ask my friends ), I think they did a good job on their burner.

Like I said, it will cost you a little more than a Pioneer. Its all up to you as to what you will be doing with the burner now and what you will be doing with it later on down the road.

The best burner you can get is the A05. You don't need dual format burners and all that rubish, just a -R burner. Pioneer is the way to go and Ritek is a good option on the media.

By the way, my V4R laser is STILL going strong as the day I bought it, and so is my Messiah - A winning combo there (touch wood )

I got my version4 used so i wasnt able to take care of it as good as I'm sure it should have been. Now I know better.

Also is there anyone here who has used the Cendyne? With FRYS great return policy I may try the Cendyne out and take back the A05 (hey anything to save some cash), that and after rebate its only 120 bucks - for a dvd burner!
