Getting Ready To Buy An X-Box

I am thinking about buying an x-box soon and I have few questions. Are the X-box games on DVD format? If so, would I be able to back it up on a DVD-R disc? and what is the best modchip I can buy? and would I need Gameshark like I do with PS2? Thanks.

Xbox games can be copied to a DVD, DVD-RW, and possibly CD-RW (if it's small enouph).
