Help please. How do I add file's to my games backups.

Hi
I am going to make backup copies of my cd-rom games but most of the games now have
upgrade patches which I would like to include on my backup copy.
So how do I add an upgrade patch to an image file so that the game will be up to date.
After installing the game and then installing the patch.
What software is required ?
I'm new at this so please be gentle if I have overlooked the bleeding obvious.

Any help would be appreciated
