FIRMWARE:
Software stored in read-only memory (ROM) or programmable ROM (PROM). Easier to change than hardware but harder than software stored on disk. Firmware is often responsible for the behaviour of a system when it is first switched on. A typical example would be a "monitor" program in a microcomputer which loads the full operating system from disk or from a network and then passes control to it. If your writer is specified to write at 4x then it should without question, especially considering it is a well-known brand like Philips. Perhaps there is something wrong in your system that is stopiing you from writing at 4x? Have you defraged your hard-drive? Do you run any programs whilst burning? How fast is your cpu? Do you burn MP3's a lot in Nero? All the Best :-) |

Firmware is software that is written/stored directly on the hardware. You need to be carefull updating your firmware, as it can cause issues with your operating system recognizing your writer if it is done incorrectly or with the wrong firmware.
