Whats the difference between expenisve and cheap cd-r' s?

Can someone please explain what the difference is between expensive and cheap cd'r 's. No matter what you pick up in the store they claim to be A+ Quality. I never bought cheap cd-r before but if there is not a major difference (for copying psx games especially) then I might as well buy cheap ones. Right now I buy SONY 650mb/74min CDQ-74CN XQ cd-r's. Is this sony product good? They werent too expensive.

The cheaper Noname CDR's and some other low-costs (for example Lead Data) are produce to the lowest cost possible. They may fail both burning and reading already after a couple of years. If you take a look at ####://www.cdmediaworld.com and click on the "CDR Quality" link you will find usefull information! I think you shoul go with Sony, TDK, Kodak and other well known companies. I use Kodak myself!

Here's my opinion on cd media. been using different brands for about 3yrs now. Yeah, the cheeper one's are manufactured to the lowest standard:

. They scratch real easy
. They have little protection to sunlight/heat/kids
. They have a short shelf-life.

I used to buy these discs, but abandoned this approach when I left them on a shelf and tried to use them after a couple of years. Some read ok, but 'some' isn't good enough really is it? I found that brands like Dischouse and Mirror were very poor in qualty, to the point where 3 out of 25 would be dudd just by looking at them.

So they may seem like a great deal, but you'll end up paying as I did over time. If you live in the UK, try the Northern Computer Fair, or any computer 'fair'. You'll get quality, branded media at trade prices (got 100 80min Memorex's in cases for 34 quid!). The same number would have cost me over 3x that amount in the shops. You don't need to buy 100 of them, either (1 if you want). Iv'e never had a Memorex go bad - even after 100 or so blazing away..

For PSX games the most popular seem to be Traxdata, Kodak, Philips, Sony & TDK as well as Traxdata Gold. The gold one's are said to be better becuase they relfect light more easily, but I think it doesn't matter that much really. Discs with no name should be avoided - even the gold one's.

Use branded medita: discs that come from a guranteed source of quality.

BOT is on a distinguished road
Cheap cds, like Kodak Gold crap, will fail to be readable within weeks of burning.

I use traxdata black 74min cdr. I write at x12 speed using Nero5 and have never had a problem with these.

I've also heared that some playstations are sensitive to the colour of the disc. A mate of mine had a 1000 series playstation and the only discs it will play are the ones on black discs, even if the other discs were good quality discs. The discs are a bit more to buy but are worth it.

Yeah, the 1000 PSX models really can be a nightmare, as I have found out!

I can use discs other than black, but Iv'e had to re-calibrate the laser using the pots on the mainboard. It's amazing just how different this model is to say, a 7502: no probs at all with any brand Iv'e burnt.
The most incompatible disc I have used with the 1002 model is..verbatim! Ironic that the best-quality disc won't work at all but there ya go..

Memorex 80min work best for me, as well as Traxdata. Also the unbranded one's work fine, but I don't think they'll last that long so Iv'e ruled them out.

BOT-CK: Sorry to hear about your probs with Kodak mate. Fail within weeks? Perhaps you had a bad batch or someone is selling dud discs -never been able to get them cheap and never had a bad 'un.

All the best.
