civ3 v1.16f and win2k

I'm running win2k and recently tried to upgrade civ3, the upgrade went smoothly but the no cd patch now causes the game to error out every time I try to load it. It gives me a hex memory reference and says it cannot be read. Anyone have any thoughts or insights on this please?
