NTSC-PAL format? what does it means?

Hello guys, first of all sorry about my english. I'll try to be as clear as posible in my questions.
I'm not related at all about backing-up my games of playstation, but I want to learn, so I have a few questions.
1. what is/means NTSC & PAL format?
2. what is a patch? what is it for?
3. can I play my copies in my playstation with out the mod chip? and how?

4. to many questions??? Hope not.

I already did a backup of one game (Atlantis); I used Nero 5.5.4.0 and played in my computer with "Virtual Game Station".
My cd-writer is a TDK 16/10/40 Velocd.
Thank you.

1. what is/means NTSC & PAL format?
ANSWER: NTSC is the 525 line/60Hz TV standard used in USA/Canada/Japan (plus a couple of others); PAL is the 625 line/50Hz TV standard used elsewhere.

2. what is a patch? what is it for?
ANSWER: If the patch is for NTSC to PAL, it means that the indicator within a specific game location that the game is for NTSC is changed to PAL. The effect of playing an NTSC game with a PAL TV and without a patch or a hardware NTSC to PAL convertor is usually that the picture is greyscale or rolls.

3. can I play my copies in my playstation with out the mod chip? and how?
ANSWER: Copies need a modchip due to the prootection mechanisms deployed by Sony.

4. to many questions??? Hope not.
ANSWER: Yep - too many questions. You should take the trouble to read the forum for more detailed advice.

COMMENT: Nero is no good if you have to patch the game in any way. You'd need to use CDR-WIN

Hi,

Well im going to open out a little with one of Charlies answere's.

"What is a patch? What is it for?"

Patches come in three main formats which are Protection Fix, Trainer, and NTSC/PAL converter.

A protection fix is a patch to get arround any copyright protection that may be on the original game. A backup of a game that has protection but no protection fix patch would fail to boot or stop at some point during game play.

A Trainer patch would give you a choice of certain cheats usually in the form of a menu. Personaly i think these spoil the backup.

An NTSC/Pal converter, Charlie has already said enough on this one!

All patches have to be APPLIED to an image file of the game to be backed up and must be of the correct type, you would need PPF-O-Matic to apply most patches and CDRWin to create the image file to your hard drive.

Thank you guys!

Thank you Charlie, Spooky and SuperSaiyan.
You have been very helpful. Now I undestand a little bit more; I have been trying to read all the tutorials/faqs, but some some words/terms I can't understand, so that's why I asked for help.
Also "reading", that's how I did my first backup.
I have cdr-win too, so I will try it.
But as far as I understood, maybe I don't have to patch my copies because I buy them at a regular local store (right?).
Thanks again.
ciao!
