i have just got a cd-r/rw(LG CED-8083B) I would like 2 back up some psx/pc games. i just dont know where 2 start or what i need.please help . this is what ive got pr233 cd-r/rw 40x cdrom ide cable easy cd creater. ps ive done one music cd it took about 5 goes and theres one song short but its ok

The first thing I would do is get yourself some decent software.

Easy CD is crap for just about everything in my experience (I know some people love it, but I ain't one of them)

Get yourself a nice copy of Nero (htttp://www.ahead.de) it'll do your non modchip protected games really well, and will also do your PC backups nicely, and all your music nicely. You can even burn MP3 to CD on the fly without converting to *.wav first

You'll also need a copy of CDRwin from Golden Hawk (http://www.goldenhawk.com)
It's not my favourite piece of software, but it seems to be everyone else's! and it's the only burning software you can use patches with, so it's pretty essential really if you're going to be burning PS games.

Firstly you will need to change a couple of settings in your PC to stop interruptions with the flow of data while burning your cds. Turn off your screen saver, disable Power Management in Windows control panel, delete any Scheduled Tasks and remove any unwanted programmes from your Start up menu.

You would be better off using CDRWin for its simplicity, for some PSX games you will need a patch to get round the protection and PPF-O-MATIC patch engine to apply the patch to the BIN file.

The settings I use for CDRWin "Extract Disk/Tracks..." are Data read at 4x, Audio Read at 4x and make sure the RAW box as checked, this will create a BIN image file ready for any required patch to be applied. To burn "Record disc", i find it best to set the record speed to 2x this will reduce errors with Audio and FMV (a playstation is basically a glourified 2x cdrom). Click "Load Cue Sheet" select the appropriate CUE file and click Start. You should end up with a fully functional working copy of your PSX and Audio CD's.
An unregistered CDRWin will only work at 1x read and write but at least you will be able to get used to it.

As far as PS games go (and PC for that matter) you are best off getting "Clone CD", of all my experience with different burning software this is the best. The reason being because using this software you don't need any patches, the software makes an exact duplicate of the CD ,including bad sectors, the only problem is that this software only supports a handful of burners. Having said that the handful is getting bigger with every update.
Settings to use are as follows:
Read subchannel data - enabled
Read subchannel audio - enabled
Don't repair bad sectors
This software is very easy to use and very user friendly.

Does Clone copy PS games with modchip protection OK though?

They say it's more or less impossible to make a true 1:1 copy of a PS disc... and I would have thought that the Playstation would pick up that it was a copy still... because it uses some weird checksum calculated by hidden data in the ISRC or something, I don't fully understand it, as well as unreadable sectors on the disc that are supposed to be impossible to replicate.

I have Clone somewhere, I've just never installed it... maybe I should give it a go, that is if it supports my CD writer!

I'm a newbie reading this, trying to sort this out.
First of all, to use these patches, backups etc., don't you need to modchip for a PS2 ?

Please layout for someone new like me with this a surefile way to make playable backups for PS2 games, and what the patches are all about?

Also, installing the modchip scares me, I afraid what it will do down the line with other ps2 products as well as invalidate the warantee.
