PAL/NTSC Selector, Grp:Uca.....?
Hey there all, Happy New Year!
Well, I'm not really that new to burning, but I had a few honest questions about the patching pages here. I use NSTC versions, but there is lingo on the page that I was wondering about and didn't see any files on the pages to explain some of these things and what they do. PAL/NTSC Selector, what is the function of that? Same as under the GRP section, what are the meanings of some of the names such as UCA, BAD, PDX ...etc. Hey, please excuse me, just curious. -Tigrr Wildcat- |

Right, PAL/NTSC refers to the different T.V. standards arounf the world: USA is NTSC, UK is PAL. They have a different amount of scan lines on the screen & also run at different frequencies. The reason for a PAL/NTSC selector is so that you can run a US game on a UK Playstation or vice versa!!
The GRP reference is for the group of programmers that developed the patch software for the game you want to back-up. Hope that helps a bit!!

PAL (Phase Alternate Line) has a lower refresh rate too... so you tend to get lower frame rate. It has to be that way with PAL games though because otherwise your console ends up running ahead of your TV (you have to wait for the hsync you see when you're coding ps games before you fire around the main program loop, I don't know if you know what I am talking about or not, but trust me, you do!)
PAL games also have lots of black borders, because of the difference in the number of scan lines. That's the main reason that us people with PAL machines might want an NTSC converter... so we can play the game full screen. NTSC (National Television Standards Committee) has a higher refresh rate and more scan lines per screen. There are other TV standards, such as SECAM (Sequential Couleur Avec Memoire) for France, but PAL and NTSC are the main systems in use. |
