Perhaps it's the way you're drives are connected on the IDE bus? Secondary master = DVD, slave = writer is possibly the best way of connecting.

Also, are you trying straight disc-to-disc copying? If so, better to make an ISO image first, then burn that image at whatever speed you like. Buffer underruns are the common error when trying to copy disc-to-disc. You can alter the disc cache in CLoneCD, but how much this will help your writer's buffer I can't say - perhaps someone could tell you more.
