Hard drives are 32 bit devices, if you add a cdrom to an ide port that already has a hardrive you are fitting a 16 bit device to that cable.
This results in that port working at the speed of the slowest device, eg, 16 bit transfer. You are an idiot if you attempt disc to disc, but then you should know that already.
